i see the reasoning behind what you are saying, but i don't think that it is as practical. The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade & the Holocaust are some good examples. You can be beaten to death or work on this field with your son, mother, and uncle... It's an unfair question, but what would you do in that kind of situation.
Racism does not exist because of slavery. It is far more ancient than that. Racism exists because of White Supremacy. It trickles down to our schools and how the "other" is being taught. It trickles down to everything: work, play, land, food, and health. Even White people who are not racist, benefit from being white.
I think this argument is overly simplified and tries to make the slave master seem good because a slave gave away his power to the master.
If it was so simple...

I think it is our duty as the wealthy to have compassion on the poor and help them avoid having to choose between starving and slavery. The key is to address the root issue (like the caste system) instead of treating the symptom.

People do have a choice.....and as far as the third-world workers that Brian commented on....they do have a choice....work or starve to death...or as I mention in my speech be beat or hung upside down. Somehow even in third-world countries I don't think that they think that the conditions they are working under are good working conditions but because of their caste or position in life and circumstances they continue to work under these horrible conditions. They do what they think is best for there families and for themselves and I do not think that we should ignore this horrible reality and say that they are living under "good conditions for them"

I agree. The question of slavery is not about being "forced" to do something, but rather not being willing to pay the penalties not to.

This is one of the things I keep telling those who think that third-world workers are "slaves" simply because they work under (what we consider) bad working conditions. For them, these are good conditions. Much better than dying in the sewers.

This is why slavery was allowed under God's Israeli law. No one could become a Hebrew slave unless they had made some choice to do so.
